Get the habit of healthy and happy

If Chronic pain and illness is a habit, could this be your solution?

What would you say if I told you that pain, illness or anxiety are habits we can inadvertently slip into?

You might initially feel insulted or defensive, but consider this a little more and you may realise that if this is the case, relief and recovery may be more achievable than you believed.

Afterall we can break a bad habit, right?

Hypnotherapy, NLP, CBT, mindfulness and even meditation are all proven ways of changing our thoughts feelings and behaviours, so it makes sense they could be your pain solution too.

Let's look at the evidence:

The definition of a habit is that it is a routine or behaviour that is repeated regularly and tends to occur subconsciously.

The American Journal of Psychology defines it as “a fixed way of thinking, willing or feeling acquired through previous repetition of a mental experience.”

Would you agree that you have a lot of repeated thoughts, feelings and behaviours that relate to your pain, illness or anxiety?

What is the first thing you think of or notice when you wake up?

Take a moment to think about even the first 5 minutes of everyday, noticing every detail, every thought, every movement, examining them with the most minutiae of detail.

Almost impossible.

Just looking at it like this will seem alien to you as these are behaviours that we repeat regularly with very little conscious awareness.

It would be totally overwhelming to actually think about every move we make or breath we take… there is a song it that somewhere!

So going back to pain, illness and anxiety, if it is chronic then by definition that means you have been doing it for some time, which ticks the repetition box.

Over that period of time you will have repeated many of the thoughts, feelings behaviours and beliefs that relate to your condition in one way or another.

I know that at my worst each and every moment seemed to be dominated by my suffering, it was definitely the first thing I thought of each morning. Thank goodness a lot was unconscious so I wasn’t aware of all of it, as what I did notice was already too much.

So there can be no doubt that these conditions in their very nature tick the mental repetition and the subconscious box.

So how can knowing this help you achieve the relief and recovery you have been searching for?

I am sure you believe me when I say habits can be broken. You can form new thoughts, feeling and behaviours and repeat them until they too become part of your subconscious.

So what if even just 20% of your suffering was caused by habit and you could change that, so you could feel 20% better. What difference would that make to your life?

So what if 80% of your suffering was caused by habit and you could change that, what difference would that make to your whole life?

I know this might seem a rather mathematical analysis of a problem that in reality gets a far softer approach to its cure.

But the bottom line is that this is the way the body and mind work, the two being totally interconnected.

Illness and suffering is not just about the diagnosis, it is about how we think and feel about every aspect of that condition.

“Change one thing and everything changes.”

I changed my thinking, I changed my feelings, I changed my imaginations (they were at times pretty catastrophic) I even changed the way I breathed, I changed my health which consequently changed my life!
